The Magic of Early Childhood Learning

Varied Lessons Student Life SIS Basel-Allschwil Kindergarten/Preschool Primary School

Tell me and I'll forget; show me and I may remember; involve me and I'll understand.

Benjamin Franklin

In the recent SIS Science Curriculum training facilitated by our in-house trainer, Laura Rickard, the concept of provocation in learning became a subject of much interest and discussion amongst the teachers. Provocation refers to the art and science of eliciting and engaging children in puzzling over and perceiving a subject of inquiry (and not just science) through open-ended techniques and strategies. Its complementary process of invitation then continues to guide them in deepening their knowledge and understanding of the topic at hand.

At SIS Allschwil, we treat our Kindergarten students as natural scientists and learners who actively seek to make sense of their world. Their interest is easily sparked and their attention hooked in exploring and discovering old and new concepts. Their learning becomes self-directed and readily internalized with teachers acting as their guides and facilitators.

A tray of colorful beads and string draw our students to explore patterns while creating their own necklace. A table set with different paint colors and a folded paper makes them experiment again and again on their budding concept of symmetry. Everyday the magic of learning is at work!
