On Wednesday, 24 April, the Primary 3 classes performed their musical, "Rumpus in the Rainforest" for families and friends. They shared important facts about the rainforest while celebrating teamwork and friendship. It was a fantastic evening of song celebrating lots of hard work by P3!

I love our excurions!" Aoife, Gym 2a

This year the SIS schools have set the goal to be climate neutral by 2028 and to initiate projects in the field of education for sustainability. We are happy to have such a great opportunity to implement the topic of sustainability at SIS Basel.
The objective in the SIS schools is to encourage the students to analyze the current situation, evaluate possible solutions and derive concrete projects. Thus, in the past few weeks, both the students from the primary level and the secondary level have been thinking about which areas at SIS Basel should be tackled first. The children in the primary level wrote and drew their ideas and in the secondary level, the students identified areas from the topics of nature, energy, resources, water and social issues, which could be translated into current projects, using an extensive questionnaire.
First Measures
One area emerged as the top priority across the school: resources. Tangible measures are now being compiled in a project to recycle more resources such as paper, plastic and other materials, to focus on reuse and to use resources more efficiently in general.
In second place is the area of energy. Here, all lighting will be converted to LED and intelligent controls in the coming year. There is greater potential for savings in the area of IT, and with simple measures we will also exploit the potential in the area of heating.
Another wish was to have more plants in and around the school: plans are now being made for ecological enhancement with plants in the surrounding area. Ideas on how to expand the design of the rooms with plants are forthcoming.
Sustainability Team
In the secondary school, almost 40 students have agreed to participate in the planning, design and implementation of these projects in the Sustainability Team. This team will now put together the actual projects and bring them to the classes. The secondary level’s questionnaire also showed that the social aspect of sustainability has a high priority for students, which is why a student council will be formed from this group as well.
The various projects will be part of a longer-term plan for sustainability at SIS Basel, which will now be implemented by the students in the coming years. The Sustainability Plan will become more and more visible over the years. Further ideas, initiatives and projects are always welcome and the goal is to make a growing contribution in the area of sustainability.

On May 3rd and 4th, Trevor Kilbey will once again host a book fair at our school. He has sold his English books at our school before. We are happy that we can host a book fair again, especially as the school gets 10% of the sales in books for the libraries. We recommend that the parents give their children an envelope with their name on it and some money for a book inside it. The teachers will be able to sign up their classes, so that the they will be with the younger students when they visit the fair.
On February 8th, 28 students, 2 Volunteer parent chaperones (who paid their own way!) and 1 Teacher boarded the night train to Amsterdam to attend FAMUN23, a Model United Nations Conference in Amersfoort, The Netherlands. This was the first major overnight excursion for the MUN club at SIS Basel since before the pandemic. The school had attended previously in 2020.
The contingent was well prepared and a number of students remarked that even as Year 8s they had attended more conferences than other Year 10 & 11 delegates in their committees. A number of students won delegate awards and all enjoyed evenings out on excursions to Utrecht and Amsterdam during the trip. We also celebrated a Birthday on the train coming back.
The MUN club would especially like to thank Heike Geiling and Paola Calevo for their support, without which the trip would have been impossible.
