James Brocklehurst
Mr. Brocklehurst’s overall influence in the development of SIS Basel cannot be underrated. As part of the School Management Team (SMT) for the last several years, Mr. B, as he is widely known, was not only one of our most well-known and respected teachers, but also a positive force for the students and the parents of the school, always advocating on behalf of teaching and learning.
He began at the SIS Basel almost 18 years ago as a Geography and History teacher and throughout his tenure there is nary a student that has not felt his impact in one way or another. Thank you, Mr. B for everything that you’ve done for the SIS Basel. We wish him all the very best in his future endeavors.
Kristin Jones
Simply the name connotes enthusiasm, passion and music in the air. Ms. Jones began at the school 10 years ago and has since played a pivotal role in the development of the SIS Basel’s music department. She has advocated strongly from the beginning for the role of music across the curriculum, and has almost single-handedly built a fully-fledged (and incredibly productive!) choir and chorus across our primary year groups.
She dances, she sings, and she plays just about every musical instrument under the sun. She has been our gift of music to so many students at the school. Her energy, professionalism and overall good-natured spirit will be sorely missed. We wish her all the very best in what is sure to be an exciting and illustrious career ahead.
Kurt Greiner
Kurt is our true veteran teacher that has now reached the golden age of retirement. He leaves behind students from the last 35 years of instruction that have truly benefited from his knowledge, his enthusiasm for math, his extraordinary character (and his jokes). He will be missed greatly as few have the personality and technique to make math fun.
As the one-time principal of the Minerva School out of which the SIS Basel was born, he was a first-class organizer and champion of educational understanding. We wish Kurt all the very best for his new future doing the things he loves to do: travel, photography and spending time with friends and family.
Jürgen Mösslang
While Jürgen was only at the SIS Basel for a short amount of time (2 years) he grew quickly into becoming one of our most beloved teachers. Beginning in Primary 5, he was one of those especially organized individuals that was often the first at school in the morning and the last to leave in the afternoon.
While Jürgen wasn’t always sure he would stay in the Basel area, preferring to take it one step at a time, he has decided to move into the public school system and stick around for a while. Our loss will be their gain, but ultimately what’s most important is that Jürgen will continue to provide his students with the very best that he has. The school wishes him well in his future endeavors.
James Nemeth
James has been a long time SIS teacher, working at the SIS school in Rotkreuz before joining us here at the SIS Basel in 2013. Since that time, Jim has taught across multiple year groups sharing his enthusiasm and knowledge with kids of all ages. Known for his keen scientific knowledge, Jim was able to bring the classroom alive with exciting lessons and clear instructions.
The students will miss Jim as a teacher and continue to cherish the time that they had with him. The relationships that he established with students and staff alike will be fondly remembered. We wish him all the best in every one of his future endeavors.
Der 06. Juni stand für die SIS Basel ganz im Zeichen des Sports: alle Jahrgangstufen absolvierten an diesem Tag einen Sporttag. Für die jüngeren Jahrgangsstufen fanden in und um die SIS verschiedene Sport- und Bewegungsanlässe statt. Der Treffpunkt für den diesjährigen Sporttag aller Primarklassen ab Stufe 2 und aller Collegeklassen war wie gewohnt auf den Anlagen des Schützenmatte Sportparks.
Die Schülerinnen und Schüler hatten an zahlreichen Spielstationen die Möglichkeit sich sportlich zu betätigen und konnten sich in den klassischen Leichtathletikdisziplinen mit ihren Klassenkameraden und Klassenkameradinnen messen. Über den Tag verteilt fanden mit einem Fussball-, Ultimate Frisbee-, Cricket- und Baseballturnier zahlreiche Teamsportevents statt. Für eine herausragende Leistung und einen neuen Schulrekord sorgte im Hochsprung Leo aus der Gym 5b mit einem Sprung über die 2 Meter-Marke. Wir gratulieren allen Teilnehmenden für ihren sportlichen Beitrag zum Gelingen dieses Tages.

“I thought I was going to die!” “I couldn’t believe I was hanging on a rope above all my classmates!” “The waterfall was gigantic, large, mighty, colossal and massive!”
These words have been borrowed from texts written by Primary 2 students describing their overnight trip to Schaffhausen. To be clear, the Primary 2 students were not in any danger, except of having a terrific time with their friends.
Our overnight trip was officially to visit the Rhein Falls in Schaffhausen, but first we journeyed to the “Aranea+ Kletter- und Badmintonzentrum”, where the children rock climbed indoors as high as they dared, bouldered and played badminton for several hours. Afterwards, we travelled to the Rhine Falls where we took a 30-minute boat tour with an audio guide down the Rhine a bit and then got up close to the actual waterfall twice. Before heading to our youth hostel, we practiced maths next to the falls as we spent our money in the souvenir shops. After our retail therapy, we drove to the youth hostel at Stein am Rhein to settle into our rooms and enjoy their spacious backyard playground for several hours before going to bed. On Wednesday morning, we packed up our things, played with our friends and drove the long way back to SIS full of happy memories of time well spent with our friends. The trip was a great success!

Congratulations to Primary 6 students on their Climate Change Exhibition! The purpose of the exhibition was to showcase our learning and raise awareness of the impact of energy use and waste management habits. We decided the best way to communicate the impact of rubbish in our environment was to create animal and plant sculptures and paintings using rubbish - "We are what we eat" was the inspiration for using rubbish to build and paint the animals and plants. We hope those who visited the exhibition were inspired to want to work towards a more sustainable way of living and find out more about how to create change. Even small changes can create a big impact. Together we can make a difference!

Platz 1 im Streetball-Turnier für die SIS Basel
Vom 24. Juni bis 27. Juni machten sich sechs Schüler und Schülerinnen der P6 auf nach Kassel zum diesjährigen SIS Cup 2023, an dem alle SIS Schulen (Schweiz, Deutschland, Brasilien) gegeneinander antreten. Die Vorfreude von Allegra, Ella, Josey, Edward, Lukas und Deniz war sehr gross. Gemeinsam mit allen weiteren Schweizer Schulen wurden sie am Mittwoch an der SIS Basel mit dem Bus abgeholt. Nach einer 9-stündigen Fahrt trafen die Schweizer Schulen dann auf die anderen SIS Schulen aus Deutschland und Brasilien.
Am Donnerstagmorgen begann der Wettbewerb mit dem Floorballturnier – die Nervosität war gross und es lief nicht wie erhofft. Davon liess sich das Team jedoch nicht unterkriegen und zeigte großartige Leistungen in den Einzeldisziplinen.
Zur grossen Freude holte Josey gleich drei Medaillen (Medizinballwurf – Platz 3, Sprint - Platz 1, 1-Meilen-Lauf - Platz 2), Edward folgte mit zwei Silbermedaillen (Medizinballwurf) und Lukas freute sich über die Bronzemedaille im 1-Meilen-Lauf.
Im Schach liess Deniz seine Konkurrenz mit Leichtigkeit hinter sich, gewann alle Spiele und holte eine weitere Goldmedaille für das Basler Team.
Beim Parkour am Freitagmorgen schaffte es Ella diesen ohne Zeitstrafen zu absolvieren (was wirklich eine Herausforderung darstellte) und auch Lukas, Josey und Edward schwangen sich in hohem Tempo durch den Parkour. Knapp am Treppchen vorbei landete das Parkour-Team auf Platz 4.
Beim Tischtennis-Turnier gaben Lukas und Edward (Team 1) und Ella und Deniz (Team 2) alles – Ella und Deniz gewannen und kamen in die nächste Runde.
Abgerundet wurde der Wettbewerb mit dem letzten Wettkampf – dem Streetball-Turnier. Während des Spiels gegen den Ausrichter Kassel bebte die Halle und die Mehrheit der Schulen unterstütze Basel, was unser Team noch mehr motivierte. Die Atmosphäre war einzigartig! Das Basler Team gewann jedes einzelne Spiel und hielt anschliessend den begehrten Pokal in den Händen.
Schlussendlich erreichte das Team Basel insgesamt Rang 5 von 16 SIS Schulen. Es war ein grossartiges Event und alle hatten grossen Spass!

Das literarische Programm der Gym 5 und 6 trifft auf leibhaftige Lyrik! Die Schülerinnen und Schüler durften den freitäglichen Abend am 5. Mai bei einer außerordentlichen Darbietung im Literaturhaus verbringen. Die Veranstaltung gehörte zur gemeinsamen Lyrikbegeisterung und bot den Schülerinnen und Schülern facettenreiche Gedichte befreundeter Deutschklassen.
Nina Herres, Deutschlehrerin
Seit vielen Jahren ist der Sport mit dem orangen Lederball ein wichtiger Bestandteil der DNA unserer Schule. 2016 gründeten wir drei «Basilisks» Schulteams, mit denen wir in der offiziellen Club-Meisterschaft spielten. Bereits ein Jahr holten unser Mädchen- und unser Jungen-Team auf der Ebene der Schulmeisterschaften sensationell die Gold- und die Bronzemedaille.
Im Februar dieses Jahres gewannen wieder sowohl die Mädchen, wie auch die Jungen die regionale Basel Schulmeisterschaft und qualifizierten sich damit erneut für die Schweizermeisterschaft.
In einem sehr hochkarätigen Turnier mit den Gewinnerinnen und Gewinnern aller Kantone spielten beide Teams mit viel Leidenschaft, Spirit und Kampfgeist. Während die Mädchen auf den grossartigen fünften Platz kamen, spielte sich das Jungen-Team bis in den Final wo wir auf unsere Nachbarn Allschwil trafen.
In einem dramatischen Finalspiel, in dem unsere «Basilisks» zeitweise mit zehn Punkten hinten waren (bei einer Spielzeit von 15 Minuten), konnten sich unsere Jungs am Ende mit einem Punkt Vorsprung durchsetzen. Nach 2018 kommt damit wieder ein nationaler Basketball-Titel ins Kleinbasel an die Erlenstrasse.
