Reading Schoolhouse 23 – 27 January 2023 - Ready, Set, Read!!

It was wonderful to see the whole school from kindergarten 1 to Class 6 taking part in our Covid-free Reading Schoolhouse 2023 and enjoying the different activities every day.  We started on Monday with the buddy classes reading together. The kindergarten children were bubbling over with excitement as they walked over to join their buddy classes.  Not only did they get to visit the big school classrooms, but they got to sit, snuggle, and listen to their buddies reading just to them.

On Wednesday, Class 5 students went and read to all the classes in the school. They all practiced a lot beforehand. Those reading to kindergarten had to learn how to show the pictures to the children while reading at the same time. Well done Class 5!

The whole school parade was held on Thursday morning in the playground. The children came dressed as their favourite character from a book. They explained their choice to their class first, then joined the parade. It wasn’t always easy to work out who the characters were. But we all had fun trying to guess.

Friday was our tenth Book fair. As always, the children loved to opportunity to look at, choose and then pay for their own books. It actually it’s a good maths activity for the kindergarten children.

We all had a fun week reading and being inspired by some amazing authors. We look forward to seeing our own future authors.

The Solar system - Planet Gallery Walk

Our primary 4 classes have been studying the solar system since the beginning of the second term. Throughout these lessons, we learned about the sun, how it is at the centre of our solar system and how the earth is one of many planets that rotate around it. We continued learning about comets, meteors, and stars. We ended off our unit discussing why day and night are caused by the earth’s spin.

We were assigned a planet that we had to research about and used the internet along with book resources in our classroom. Our teacher provided us with guided questions to help with the research. Once we completed the research, we created a colourful and informative poster on our planet. We were the experts for our planet!

Over the course of a week, we laid out all the posters around the classroom and had a gallery walk. Some students created a 3D model of their planet to include in the gallery walk. The best part was going around the class and reading and learning about other planets.  While doing so, we gathered information from all the posters and filled out our booklet with lots of new information. We completed the project by creating a front cover for our booklet.
