News from the School

At the beginning of February, Chinese New Year was celebrated at SIS. Our special guest, Nanli Zhao and her helpers came by every day to bring cultural and traditional activities to our SIS students. AMAZING projects emerged from the experience!
From Chinese calligraphy, traditional ink painting, Chinese character challenge game, bamboo stick dance, storytelling to making yummy dumplings,  Ms. Zhao's infectious energy was received well and the students really had a good time participating in the various workshops.

Everyone was so concentrated and eager to learn about this Chinese art form. It is not easy to manage this Chinese Calligraphy brush, let alone paint with ink! However, they did very well! Their master pieces were exhibited in the foyer.
We can't thank enough Ms. Zhao and her colleagues who initiated this wonderful traditional cultural week at SIS.

During Chinese New Year, Chinese people will greet each other with pleasant words like: 'Xin nian kuai le' which means 'Happy New Year' (simplified Chinese: 新年快乐; trad. Chinese: 新年快樂; pinyin: xīn nián kuài lè ), or 'Hao yun' which means 'Good Fortune' (simplified Chinese: 好运, trad. Chinese: 好運, pinyin: hǎo yùn), 'Kung Hei Fat Choi' (gōng xǐ fā cái) 'Congratulations and be prosperous' (simplified Chinese: 恭喜发财; trad. Chinese: 恭喜發財; pinyin: gōngxǐ fācái; in Cantonese: Kung Hei Fat Choi).

Marie-Claude Gaëtan, Head of Preschool and Primary 1

Primary 6 students have been busy studying renewable and non-renewable sources of energy. We have been researching how our planet has been impacted with the use of plastics in our everyday life. Oceans are highly impacted with litter, particularly plastics and microplastics. Our students have created beautiful water colour and collage paintings, highlighting the devastating effect plastics have on ocean life.

Im Dezember fuhr ich mit den Schwerpunktklassen Wirtschaft und Recht der Gym 4 und 5 nach Zürich ins Finanzmuseum. Alle haben sich auf diesen Ausflug gefreut und haben sich gut eingebracht. Bei der gebuchten Führung wurden viele Fragen gestellt und reges Interesse bekundet. Darüber habe ich mich sehr gefreut! Auch die Disziplin war gut und alle haben gut mitgemacht.

Im Museum gab es viel Interessantes zu sehen, zum Beispiel Aktien aus dem 17 Jh. auf Kälberfell geschrieben! Die ganze Entwicklung der Finanzwelt wurde graphisch gut nachvollziehbar dargestellt und erläutert und wir haben dort eine sehr gute und aufschlussreiche Zeit verbracht. Da alles so anschaulich erläutert wurde, war es für die Schülerinnen und Schüler gut nachvollziehbar, verständlich und lehrreich und der Ausflug diente als wunderbare Ergänzung zu den im Vornherein behandelten Themen. Es war ein gelungener Ausflug!

On December 22nd, Gym 4 and Gym 5 visited the great exhibition « Van Gogh alive » in Basel, at Messeplatz. Here are some students’ feedbacks:

It was a very special experience. We arrived at Messe Platz and had to go up the escalators to get to the museum. One could lie down onto some cushions and look at the paintings being displayed on the walls. After that we went to a small room full of sunflowers with red lights, the walls were covered with mirrors. Then there was the painting experience where one could paint famous paintings painted by Van Gogh. Overall, it was a very pleasant trip. (Nathan, Gym 5b)

Ausflug ins Museum von Van Gogh Alive. Einmal etwas anderes als der normale Unterricht, und es hat sich gelohnt zu gehen. Es war eine tolle Erfahrung. Über zahlreiche Beamer werden mehrere Bilder, die Van Gogh gemalt hat gezeigt, die alle das gleiche Thema haben. Zudem sind die Bilder nicht nur statisch gezeigt worden, sondern alle Bilder haben sich auch durch Animation bewegt. Ein tolles Erlebnis was ich jedem nur empfehlen kann zu besuchen. (Bob, Gym 5b)
