News from the School

On the 20th June the Kindergarten 1 class went with their friends from Kindergarten 2 on our annual Kindergarten trip to celebrate the end of the school year. This year we took the train to Meilen where we caught a bus that ended near the top of the Pfannenstiel. 

We found a lovely field, ate our snack and played before setting off on our hike. We said "Hi" to some goats at a nearby farm then continued through a nature preservation area where we saw many types of insects. Walking past farms, forests and fields, we made our way to the top of the Pfannenstiel where we found a lookout tower. 

We ate our lunch and played in the forest then walked back to a restaurant where we enjoyed lots of different playground games. Of course, the highlight of the day was...ice cream!! We enjoyed it together as we played. Although it was hot, we hiked our way back to the bus stop where we made the return journey in reverse. When we returned to school we were tired but had big smiles on our faces. 

At school, the Kindergarten 1 children wrote a poem together about our trip:

Kindergarten trips are for fun and celebration! It was wonderful to spend such a special day together, enjoying all of the friendships we have made this year in Kindergarten.

Year 4 had an amazing time during our class camp in Bern at the start of June.
 
Our adventure started on Wednesday when we took the train to Bern and checked into the Bern Youth Hostel. The kids were really excited to share rooms with their friends. The location was great, right on the Aare River and just next to the Parliament. 
 

On Wednesday we went to Creviva. This is the children’s learning area of the Paul Klee Museum. On a tour of the museum, the children learned about Paul Klee, his life, and his art. In a two-hour workshop, they then created their own versions of his famous work, “Park near Lu (1938)".

Thursday, we did a walking tour of Bern. The children were able to see the Parliament, the Zytglogge (Clock Tower), Einstein’s house, Bern Minster (Cathedral) and more. Obviously, the biggest highlight was seeing the bears at the Bear Pit.
 
We enjoyed playing football, Uno and learning to hula-hoop in the park in the evenings. A special thanks to Mr. von Niederhäusern for rescuing the football that went for an unexpected swim in the Aare!

In the afternoon, we visited the Bern Botanical Gardens. Here we took a tour to learn about the various pollinators that can be found here in Switzerland and beyond. After we visited one of the Playground Längmuur, an enormous playground that was a huge hit with all the students.
 
Friday, we visited the Bern Historical Museum. The students learned about how people lived in the past.
 
A lot of great memories were made. It was great to see how responsible, respectful, and independent our Year 4 has become. Overall, the trip was a great success!

Was ist Nachhaltigkeit
Nachhaltigkeit kommt von dem Wort "nachhaltig" und bedeutet, dass etwas Gutes für die Umwelt, die Tiere, die Menschen und die Natur getan wird. Einige Beispiele sind sauberes Wasser, keine Armut, gute Gesundheit und Wohlbefinden.

Nachhaltigkeit in der SIS Männedorf-Zürich
Die SIS Männedorf-Zürich schaut seit Jahren auf eine nachhaltige Schule. Dies bezieht sich nicht nur auf ein vorbildliches Verhalten gegenüber der Umwelt, sondern auch auf die mentale und physische Gesundheit der Kinder.  Ein Ort, wo die Schule sehr viel Nachhaltigkeit repräsentiert, ist das Mittagessen. Die Schule liegt Wert auf ausgewogenes Essen, welches aus einem richtigen Restaurant kommt. Das Mittagessen Personal achtet auch darauf, dass jedes Kind zu mindestens ein wenig Salat oder anderes Gemüse ist. Ausserdem achten die Lehrer/innen auf wenig Essensverschwendung. Ein Ort, wo unsere Schule auf psychische Gesundheit achtet, ist beim Thema Handy in der Schule. Während des kompletten Schultages, gilt in der SIS Männedorf Handyverbot, dadurch leiden Freundschaften nicht unter dem Handy. Das Handyverbot bewegt die Kinder auch dazu, Bücher zu lesen und sich dadurch weiterzubilden. Hier in der SIS Männedorf-Zürich, haben wir Nachhaltigkeit-Klima regeln, als Schule versuchen wir sie immer einzuhalten. In unsere Klassen haben wir Leute, die kontrollieren, ob das Licht nicht an ist, um Elektrizität zu sparen. Auch in den Pausen versuchen wir immer den Kompost zu benutzen, so dass wir in ein paar Jahren frische Erde haben. Unsere Werte sorgen für eine gute Gemeinschaft in der Schule. Wenn man besonders gut ist, wird es mit einem Shining Star belohnt. Insgesamt ist unsere Schule sehr nachhaltig und hat immer eine gute Atmosphäre.

Nachhaltigkeit Team
Seitdem dem 2. Semester des Schuljahrs 2022/2023, liegt die SIS Männedorf-Zürich besonders Wert auf Nachhaltigkeit. Miss Kiener, eine Lehrerin unserer Schule, gründete ein Nachhaltigkeit-Team. In diesem Team reden wir zum grössten Teil über Umweltverschmutzung und was das mit unserer Erde machen. Nachdem, wir uns über Nachhaltigkeit, austauschten, mussten wir uns überlegen, welches Nachhaltigkeits-Projekt wir durchführen wollen. Wir entschieden uns für das Projekt Papiertücher gegen wiederverwendbare Tücher auszutauschen. Dadurch verbrauchen wir kein Papier, wenn wir uns die Hände abtrocknen. 

Ausserdem besuchten zwei Mitglieder des Nachhaltigkeits-Team SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz, um unser Team und unser Projekt zu den anderen SIS Schulen zu präsentieren. Danach kam ein Nachhaltigkeits-Experte und informierte uns über interessante Fakten, welche wir uns noch nicht bewusst waren. Wie zum Beispiel, dass der Sauerstoff von jedem zweiten Atemzug vom Meer kommt. Die Präsentationen der anderen Schüler waren inspirierend. Einer der anderen Nachhaltigkeits-Teams kaufte Hühner, ihnen die Mittagessen Reste zu geben, dadurch gibt es weniger Essensverschwendung.

The students and staff enjoyed exciting fun-filled sports day split over two days.

It was such a pleasure to watch the children competing and partaking in sporting and skills events. Teamwork and good sportsmanship were evident everywhere and children were having a go and giving their best efforts. Hearing their cheers and seeing their smiling faces, told us that the sports days were a great success.

Well done to all the children. Despite the heat, they all partook brilliantly and made us super proud to be their teachers and leaders.
