Eisbär Emil hat sich bei uns gemeldet und beklagt sich, dass er langsam sein zu Hause verliert. Was ist denn los? Die Eisschollen werden immer kleiner. Das Eis schmilzt.

Wir wollten es genauer wissen und schauten uns zuerst die Klimazonen unserer Erde an. An den Polen ist es echt kalt und in Richtung Äquator wird es immer wärmer. Die Wissenschaftler sind sich einig, dass die Temperatur auf der Erde seit geraumer Zeit steigt, d.h. am Nord- und Südpol schmilzt die riesige Eis- und Schneedecke auf dem Festland und lässt den Meeresspiegel steigen.

Hierzu machten wir 2 Experimente:

1. Wir wollten wissen, was passiert, wenn Eisschollen im Meer schmelzen. Wird der Meeresspiegel steigen?

2. Wir wollten wissen, wenn Eis auf dem Festland schmilzt. Wird der Meeresspiegel steigen?

Damit es auf der Erde nicht wärmer wird und der Meeresspiegel nicht steigt, erzählte uns Eisbär Emil, sollen wir doch weniger CO2 produzieren! Kohlenstoffdioxid (CO2) entsteht aus der Verbrennung von Kohle, Öl und Gas und ist für 2/3 der Erderwärmung verantwortlich. CO2 und andere Gase, wie z.B. Methan steigen in die Atmosphäre auf, die unsere Erde wie einen Mantel umhüllt. Treibhausgase lassen die eindringende Sonnenwärme nur teilweise wieder entweichen. Durch den Treibhauseffekt verändert sich das Klima und auf der Erde wird es immer wärmer. Weil das Eis an den Polen schmilzt, kommt es in manchen Gegenden öfter zu Überschwemmungen. An anderen Orten fällt oft lange kein Regen, und auch Hitzewellen und Stürme nehmen zu. Vom Klimawandel sind Menschen, Tiere und Pflanzen auf der ganzen Welt, unserem zu Hause, betroffen.

Was können wir dagegen tun?

Eisbär Emil meint, dass wenn wir alle ein wenig helfen, er sein zu Hause nicht verlieren wird. Nebst der Förderung erneuerbaren Energien, können wir öfters das Fahrrad benutzen, Abfall trennen und recyclen, Wasser und Energie sparen, Bäume und Sträucher schützen und natürlich auch neue pflanzen!

Vom 15. bis 17. Mai 2023 war die 3. Klasse in ihrem ersten Klassenlager in Atzmännig. Trotz trübem Wetter, hatten sie viel Spass. Hier ein paar Impressionen des Lagers:

Last term, we all agreed that our science topic, electricity, was very hands-on. We made electrical circuits using motors, wires and batteries and concluded that when we work manually, we learn faster and in a more interesting way. Mattia stated that this way of learning was “definitely good. Every lesson you learned something new and that was magnificent,” while Irina explained that it was “Great! I loved how we balanced working on paper and working manually. I loved the topic’s working strategy!

Apart from this topic’s learning strategy, we also learned a lot of interesting facts. For example, we learned that there are two types of electrical currents: AC and DC. We also learned the names of the different parts of an electrical circuit and what their scientific symbols look like. We think this was a fun topic to work on and to learn from.

Ratatouille, escargot, coq au vin, crème brûlée, crêpe - les élèves de 6ème classe en avaient le choix et ils étaient acteurs. En groupes, ils ont répété et joué le jeu de rôle "Au restaurant", avec de bonnes idées et tout en français. Le point culminant a été la première à l'Assembly avec la scène et le public (voir les photos).

Les différentes scènes étaient conçues de manière différente : classique en couple avec entrée, plat principal et dessert, un peu criminelle sans payer l’addition et romantique avec une demande en mariage.

Avec des invités exigeants, les serveurs ont été mis à rude épreuve, si bien que dans l'agitation, le plateau et son contenu sont tombés par terre (c'était joué).

Les performances étaient sensationnelles et authentiques comme dans la vraie vie. Et c'était délicieux... Bravo!

The SIS Cup is an annual sports competition between the SIS schools of Switzerland, Germany and Brazil, with 16 teams and 96 students competing this year. The 2023 competition took place 25-26th May on the campus of SIS Kassel in Germany and included floorball, basketball, table tennis, an obstacle course, tug-of-war, chess and several individual athletics events.

This year’s team finished in sixth place overall – the best result of any Männedorf team so far! Not only did these six students compete strongly, they also admirably represented our school and enjoyed making new friends and memories. Some wish they could continue to compete after Year 6, some look forward to possibly participating again next year and everyone can be VERY proud of their effort, motivation and attitude. Wonderful job, team!

Year 2 are currently exploring the topic of ‘Rocks’. We have spent a lot of time outside in the sunshine searching for manmade and naturally occurring rocks. The children identified rocks used in the streets, pavements, walls, buildings and gardens in the neighborhoods around our school. We also saw many rock types used in different ways at the train station. 

We have learnt the names of many naturally occurring and manmade rocks including marble, slate, chalk, tarmac, bricks, sandstone, basalt and concrete. We also handled different kinds of rocks and sorted them according to characteristics such as hardness, roughness, colour and shape. In the coming weeks we plan to experiment further. 

Here are some interesting things we have learned about rocks so far: 
 

Rocks are very pretty and there are small rocks and big rocks. I like small rocks.
