As the days get longer and the sun gets friendlier, we pursued our holiday club themed “Spring Bliss” in full bloom.

One huge highlight of the holiday club was ‘The Great Pfäffikon Bake-off’. As we ushered in good weather towards Zürich, our students engaged in baking sessions. From chocolate cookies to personalised pizzas for their lunch. They attended the «Backshule by Wüst» in Zürich for professional classes and were encouraged to show off their own skills. Under the guidance of a professional pastry chef, they learned how to make puff pastry and custard. Their end product was a lovely Strawberry Custard tart. Our students had an excellent opportunity to have hands-on learning on the art of pastry making. A huge part of incorporating cooking and baking is to allow our students to learn practical skills like measuring ingredient quantities, counting and following instructions in a recipe etc. This was completed in a nurturing environment with their friends and they were equipped with  essential skills that will serve them well in life.

We also completed an excursion to «Langenberg Wildlife Park», home to 19 native species of mammals. Our students learned about how wildlife parks create a safe haven for endangered animals. The park also informed the children on how they relocate animals back into their natural habitats. The “Raubtierrundweg” was the ideal place for the children to observe the animals in their natural habitats. In proximity we also spotted a brown bear swimming in the stream and watched a family of foxes carry on about their day. This brought the students great excitement and joy. It was a lovely day to learn about our wildlife and efforts made to conserve it and our role as a society to protect it. 

Another lovely excursion included a trip to the  «Knights Castle in Bubikon». Our students were immersed in the history of the medieval monastery of the Knights Hospitaller. Currently, it is a history museum and we had a VIP guided tour. We learned that it is home to the  Hotz coin collection, including an assortment of more than 400 coins from the 14th -18th century. It also hosts the collection of 220 antique arms donated by Johann Jakob Vogel. This was incredibly exciting for our students as they had a sneak peak into life from centuries ago and were engrossed with its collection.  The impressive epochal herb garden presents mediaeval herbs from the ancient world on about 400 square meters. As a lovely surprise, our students had the opportunity to make their very own bespoke shields. Here, they had a decorative workshop to design their shields, incorporating the house’s coat of arms.  

To close our fantastic week, students participated in Glass Painting for their arts and crafts session. After choosing their designs, they traced them on glass with lots of colours, using their imagination and creativity. Every one of  them created unique pieces which represented their personalities very vividly.  It was a fun and easy way for the children to practise self-expression, which is a large part of our Holiday Club. It was a wonderful way for students to explore their creativity and develop new hobbies. 

To end our week, we spent our last afternoon taking a refreshing walk to our neighbouring forest. Our students played games with one another and said their goodbyes before they parted ways for their Spring Break. 

Our week celebrating "Spring Bliss" was a huge success. The children had a lovely time learning new skills, gathering new knowledge and immersing themselves in local history and cuisine. We had a fully packed five-day Holiday Club and look forward to receiving our students again for our next Holiday Club in the summer.

This year, World Book Day was on Tuesday 23rd April. This day was created by the United National Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) to celebrate reading and books on a global level. Therefore, we held our annual Book Fair days on the 22nd and 23rd April. Monday, the 22nd April was the German Book Fair, organised with “Ex Libris”, and on Tuesday, 23rd April was the English Book Fair, organised with Trevor Kilbey from “NewBooks2Go”. 

While reading has always been a classroom focus, the Book Fair Days are one way that we make reading a school-wide focus. The books are organised by age level and the pupils attend the Book Fair with their class and their class teacher. The teacher guides the pupils on how to pick the right book for their age as well as their reading level. Of course, pupils sometimes choose high interest books that are at a higher reading level, but these books can also increase their motivation to read for pleasure. The variety of Guinness Book of Records books are often very popular among the younger pupils and, while they cannot read all the words in the book, these books teach them that non-fiction books can be exciting and still accessible through pictures. 

It is important to add that reading for pleasure directly correlates with pupil achievement in many subject areas. The more children read for pleasure, the higher the likelihood is that they will succeed across subject areas. Reading helps build pupils’ vocabulary as well as their understanding of the world while, at the same time, building stamina and overall motivation towards academics. The Book Fair Days are just one way we support the important activity of reading for pleasure at SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz.

Primary Intro and Kindergarten students are currently learning about butterflies in science, mathematics, writing, and art. In science, they studied about a butterfly's life cycle and body parts. After reading 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carl, the students were asked to place the picture cards from the book in the correct order. 

In mathematics, the students are learning what the word symmetry means. This aligns perfectly with the topic of butterflies, as their wings are symmetric. The students need to color four different butterflies whose wings are the same on both sides. In writing, the students will learn about the sequence of events in a butterfly's life cycle. The Primary Intro students will write what happens first, next and last. The students will first make a rough draft and then a final copy to create a butterfly diagram. The Kindergarten students will cut and paste pictures and words to show me what comes first, next and last. 

In art, both classes will use various materials, including clothes pins, coffee filters, markers, and water to create a butterfly. The students can be as creative as they want when designing the wings and body.  

In the early Primary and Kindergarten grades, I always try to integrate my science topics with the other school subjects. This makes it fun and engaging for the students and shows them that what they learn in one subject can be applied to different subjects. I enjoy teaching butterflies this time of year because the students can pick up so much and then use that knowledge when they start seeing them outside.

Ganz wichtig, nicht nur Autofahrer müssen die Verkehrsregeln beherrschen, auch Radfahrer!

Diesen Frühling durften die Schülerinnen und Schüler der 4.Klasse in Zusammenarbeit mit der Polizei die Radfahrerausbildung absolvieren. In den Theoriestunden lernten sie in den vergangenen Wochen alles Wichtige rund um das Fahrrad sowie die Regeln für das verkehrssichere Verhalten auf der Strasse.

Die Vorfahrtsregeln, Verkehrsschilder, Gefahren im Verkehr und Handzeichen sind nur wenige Beispiele für die umfassenden Inhalte aus dem Unterricht. Sie wissen jetzt auch, was ein verkehrssicheres Fahrrad ausmacht und wie lebenswichtig ein passender Fahrradhelm ist. In der Praxis mussten alle einen Parcours auf dem Pausenplatz bewältigen, indem sie um Hindernisse fahren, Gegenstände transportieren und gezielt bremsen. Die Fahrtüchtigkeit der Kinder wurde auch in Freienbach auf einer längeren Teststrecke mehrmals geübt.

Die Polizistin absolvierte mit uns allen ebenfalls ein Probetraining, bei dem sie den Schülerinnen und Schüler mit Hilfe von Kopfhörern, während dem Fahrrad fahren mit wertvollen Tipps zur Seite stand. Besonders herausfordernd war das Linksabbiegen an einer Kreuzung: Schulterblick – Handzeichen – einordnen zur Mitte - Vorfahrtsregeln beachten – Gegenverkehr Vorrang gewähren – erneuter Schulterblick – abbiegen in grossem Bogen – auf Fussgänger achten – einordnen am rechten Fahrbahnrand.

Diese Trainings fanden oft unter schwierigen Bedingungen bei strömendem Regen und Kälte statt. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler meisterten diese jedoch mit Bravur und viel Durchhaltevermögen, immer mit dem Ziel vor den Augen, den theoretischen und den praktischen Teil mit tollen Leistungen zu bestehen.

Vor hundert Jahren starb der Weltautor Franz Kafka - heute begeben wir uns auf seine Spuren. Franz Kafka ist ein deutschsprachiger Autor. Er lebte um 1900, hatte eine schwierige Beziehung zu seinem Vater und hat "Die Verwandlung" geschrieben.

 
Mit diesem Vorwissen machte sich die Klasse der Matura 1 am 24. April auf den Weg nach Zürich zur Kafka Ausstellung "Türen, Tod und Texte" im Strauhof. Während der Zugfahrt wurde klar, dass die Erwartungen vielfältig und die Neugier gross sind. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler erhofften sich, mehr über das Leben des Schriftstellers zu erfahren und in seine Werke hineinzuschnuppern. Auch der Wunsch wurde formuliert, mehr über Kafkas Einfluss in der heutigen Zeit zu erfahren. Zudem kamen Fragen auf, wie: Welche Werke hat Franz Kafka verfasst und was hat ihn dabei inspiriert? 

Der Besuch der Ausstellung und die Teilnahme an einer Führung beantworteten all diese Fragen und gaben zudem einen sehr guten Einblick in Kafkas Schaffensprozess, in seine Beziehung zur Literatur, zu den Menschen in seinem Umfeld und machten den Menschen hinter dem Autor sichtbar. Neben den Zeichnungen von Kafka selbst, seinen Briefen, Tagebüchern und Manuskripten, konnten die Schülerinnen und Schüler mittels Kopfhörer in seine Werke reinhören und somit ganz in die literarische Welt dieses Jahrhundertautors eintauchen.

Auf diese Weise auf Kafka eingestimmt, werden die Maturaschülerinnen und -schüler in Term 4 dieses Schuljahres den Roman „Der Prozess“ im Deutschunterricht lesen und genauer untersuchen. „Der Prozess“ ist ein Jahrhundertwerk, in dem Franz Kafka auf beispielhafte Weise die wesentlichen Existenzfragen des modernen Menschen neu formuliert. Es ist also nicht verwunderlich, dass sich dieses Werk sich auf der Maturalektüreliste für das Fach Deutsch wiederfindet.

Auf Gymnasialstufe einen altersgerechten und motivierenden Einstieg ins Rechnungswesen zu finden, ist naturgemäss anspruchsvoll. Sind doch die unterliegenden Logiken teilweise schwierig zu knacken und die Analyse von Geschäftszahlen a priori abstrakt. In Zeiten von Analytics und KI kann man sich gar fragen, ob es «die/den Buchhalter/Buchhalterin» überhaupt noch braucht? Das Unterrichtskonzept muss also neu gedacht werden, mit direkt erkennbaren Praxisbezügen und mit der Schaffung abwechslungsreicher «Use Cases».

Die Matura 1 Klasse startete ihre Reise ins Thema mit einer lustvoll-kreativen, aber überaus analytisch und praxisnahen Absatzplanung in Excel für ihre eigene hypothetische Glacéstand-Unternehmung. Kleine Veränderungen an Stellschrauben wie Personalstunden oder Preisanpassungen führten zu grossen Ausschlägen auf der «Bottom Line».

Aus dieser Aufgabe heraus wurde die Bedeutung einer soliden Finanzplanung erkannt – doch wie bildet man den laufenden Betrieb ab und interpretiert die Resultate? Um den klassischen Buchungssatz kommt man auch heute noch nicht herum. Um die Zusammenhänge und Systematiken sichtbar und verständlich zu machen, benutzen wir insbesondere online-Tools wie «bookyto». Diese simulieren vereinfacht ein heute standardmässig eingesetztes digitales Buchhaltungsprogramm und erleichtern das Verständnis, da Journal, Konten und Abschlüsse beim Buchen parallel angezeigt werden.
 

Von der Übungsumgebung wurde das Wissen Schritt für Schritt in Praxiskontexte transferiert. Mittels einer von zwei jungen Studenten kreierten videobasierten Fallstudie lernte die Klasse die kaufmännischen Prozesse vom Erstellen einer Offerte bis hin zum Verbuchen des Zahlungseingangs plastisch kennen. Dies nun direkt im realen Rechnungsprogramm «Abaninja» des in der Schweizer KMU-Landschaft weit verbreiteten ERP (Enterprise Resource Planning)-Ökosystems «Swiss21».

Die im Rechnungswesen zu bewältigende Lernkurve ist initial steil, doch der Moment in dem «der Nebel sich lichtet» kann für die Lernenden äusserst motivierend sein. Hinter hochkomplex wirkenden Vorgängen erscheinen die immer gleichen Grundlogiken und das Üben kann beginnen, wie Rätsel lösen und Spass zu haben. Durch die hohe praktische Anwendbarkeit kann auch der unternehmerische Geist (weiter) befeuert werden.
