Every year in February we arrange a sleepover for grade 2 at SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz, as part of their learning experience. This year, Grade 2 had an unforgettable adventure as they participated in a special library sleepover filled with teamwork, excitement and joy. The event was designed to foster collaboration, independence and the first step to future camps in the older grades. 

The evening kicked off with a walk in the forest after school. When they returned to school, they prepared a delicious Mexican dinner. The students took part in all of the preparations such as chopping vegetables to setting the table. The young chefs took charge of the entire process, proudly sharing a meal they had made themselves. After dinner, everyone joined in to clean up, reinforcing teamwork and responsibility. With full stomachs and eager spirits, the children embarked on a thrilling treasure hunt around the whole school. Divided into teams, they followed clues in different parts of the campus, working together to solve riddles and uncover the final treasure. The hunt was a great hit and sparked excitement and curiosity as students explored familiar spaces in a whole new way. 

Before bedtime the children settled down in the library, sharing books and games with their classmates. Laughter and stories filled the room until it was time to sleep among the bookshelves, creating a magical and cozy atmosphere.

The next morning, some students took an early morning walk to a nearby bakery, returning with freshly baked bread, while the others remained at school to prepare and set up for breakfast. Parents were invited to join this feast which was served by their children.  This was a resounding success, bringing students, teachers and parents together in a joyful celebration of learning and community. It will surely be remembered by all!

Im NMG-Unterricht (Natur, Mensch, Gesellschaft) der fünften Klasse drehte sich in den letzten Wochen alles um das spannende Thema „Stoffe und ihre Eigenschaften“. Die Schülerinnen und Schüler begaben sich auf eine Entdeckungsreise in die Welt der Materie und lernten dabei nicht nur grundlegende Begriffe kennen, sondern auch, wie man verschiedene Stoffe voneinander unterscheiden kann.

Was sind Stoffe und welche Eigenschaften haben sie?

Zu Beginn des Themas stand die grundlegende Frage: Was sind eigentlich Stoffe? Gemeinsam erarbeiteten wir, dass Stoffe alles sind, was eine Masse und ein Volumen hat – ob fest, flüssig oder gasförmig. Die Kinder lernten die drei Aggregatzustände kennen: fest, flüssig und gasförmig. Besonders spannend wurde es bei der Frage, wie Stoffe von einem Aggregatzustand in einen anderen wechseln können. Hier kamen Begriffe wie Schmelzen, Verdampfen, Kondensieren und Gefrieren ins Spiel. Anhand einfacher Beispiele wie dem Schmelzen von Eis und dem Verdampfen von Wasser konnten die Schülerinnen und Schüler die Theorie gleich in die Praxis umsetzen.

Das Kugelmodell der Atome – Stoffe verstehen lernen

Um zu verstehen, warum Stoffe sich so verhalten, wie sie es tun, führte der Weg weiter zum Kugelmodell der Atome. Dieses vereinfachte Modell half den Kindern zu begreifen, dass alle Stoffe aus kleinsten Teilchen bestehen, die sich je nach Aggregatzustand unterschiedlich anordnen und bewegen. Mithilfe von anschaulichen Grafiken und Modellen konnten die Schülerinnen und Schüler nachvollziehen, wie sich Atome in festen Stoffen dicht und geordnet anordnen, während sie in Flüssigkeiten und Gasen deutlich freier beweglich sind.

Experimente zu Stoffeigenschaften – Forschen wie die Profis

Der Höhepunkt des Themas waren zweifellos die Experimente, bei denen die Schülerinnen und Schüler die Eigenschaften verschiedener Stoffe selbst erforschen konnten. Dabei standen drei Stoffeigenschaften im Mittelpunkt: Wärmeleitfähigkeit, Wasserlöslichkeit und Schmelztemperatur. Mit grossem Eifer führten die Kinder Tests durch, um herauszufinden, welche Stoffe Wärme gut leiten, welche sich leicht in Wasser lösen und bei welcher Temperatur bestimmte Stoffe schmelzen.

Besonders aufregend wurde es, als es darum ging, einen „unbekannten Stoff“ zu identifizieren. Mit Hilfe eines Feuer- und eines Wassertests und ihren zuvor gewonnenen Erkenntnissen konnten die Schülerinnen und Schüler detektivisch ermitteln, um welchen Stoff es sich handelte. Die Begeisterung war gross, als die richtigen Schlüsse gezogen wurden und die Geheimnisse der Stoffe gelüftet waren. Die beigefügten Bilder zeigen die jungen Forscherinnen und Forscher bei ihrer Arbeit – hochkonzentriert und mit viel Freude am Entdecken.

Einblicke ins Labor – Lernen mit allen Sinnen

Die Experimente und die anschauliche Vermittlung der Theorie halfen den Kindern nicht nur, die Welt der Stoffe besser zu verstehen, sondern auch, wissenschaftliche Methoden wie Beobachten, Vergleichen und Schlussfolgern aktiv anzuwenden. Damit wurden nicht nur naturwissenschaftliche Kenntnisse vermittelt, sondern auch das Interesse für das Forschen geweckt.

Herr Savvas Savidis (Klassenlehrer der 5. & 6. Klasse)

Mit der Matura 1 betrachteten wir Trigonometrische Funktionen, und wieso ein Kreis eine Schlangenlinie produzieren kann. Einfache Betrachtungen machen dies noch einfacher, und unsere Kreise haben im Umfang nicht mehr die 360°, sondern 6,28…, also 2π. 

Wer steigt steiler aufwärts, Schülerinnen und Schüler, die unsere Treppen erklimmen oder die Bergbahn auf den Pilatus? Mit Massstab, Papier und Taschenrechner erkunden die Schülerinnen und Schüler die Tangensfunktion und erkennen, dass unser Weg hinauf steiler ist. Wir erarbeiten uns die Theorie, entweder am Computer oder auf dem Papier - oder am besten mit beiden. 

Bei der Matura 2/ IB-Vorbereitungsstufe wachsen die Kurven in den Himmel, denn so vermehren sich Algen im Teich oder Salmonellen im Joghurt. Auch hier werden Aufgaben gelöst, bis die Bleistifte stumpf sind, um die Übungsfehler exponentiell zu verkleinern. 

Die ansonsten ‚trockenen‘ Mathematikstunden werden durch Schüleraktivitäten, Anwendungen aus der realen Welt und Diskussionen aufgelockert, wie zum Beispiel: 

• Was mussten die Ägypter beim Bau der Pyramiden wissen?
• Wie reich wären die Nachfahren von Julius Cäsar heute, wenn dieser nur ein Sesterz auf der Bank zu zwei Prozent angelegt hätte?
• Weshalb soll man Schinkenbrötchen nicht in der Sonne liegen lassen?
• Bis zu welcher Höhe muss man einen Champagnerkelch austrinken, so dass nur noch die Hälfte darin ist? 

Die Schülerinnen und Schüler nehmen gerne am Unterricht teil. An den Diskussionen nehmen alle rege teil - Probleme und Rätsel zu lösen macht eben Spass.

SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz offers a variety of afternoon clubs for all of its students. These clubs take place after school hours, and the students look forward to extending their learning, even after a long day of school. Students have the opportunity to improve their skills in sports, IT, or languages, amongst many other clubs.

French is the second most spoken official language in Switzerland. It is mandatory for students to learn French, from the fifth year of Primary school until Secondary 3. As an international and multicultural school, we are increasingly encountering and enrolling students from all over the world. Many of our international Secondary students join our school without any prior studies of this important foreign language. 

 
To bridge the foundational gaps and integrate our students smoothly into learning French, at SIS Pfäffikon-Schwyz, we welcome all beginners into class and encourage them to join the French club to extend their learning beyond class time. This helps students greatly, by introducing them to the culture, phonetics and basic content of the French language through various activities. 

A specific curricular plan was developed for introducing French to the new language speakers. A focus on French culture and the basic contents of the language (word genders, core vocabulary, grammar, and phonetics), has been adapted to meet the needs of the students and the Secondary curriculum. Thus, between playful and engaging activities such as games, role-play and short dialogues, students have the opportunity to build essential foundations for communication and use these acquired skills in regular classes and in daily interaction.

During French club, our Secondary students thus have the chance to ask questions, understand the workings of the language, practice oral communication and improve their writing in a familiar, relaxed, and comfortable environment. Students receive essential teacher support and the positive support of their peers who, like them, are learning this exciting new language. In this club, they can even acquire the necessary tools needed for class presentations and the delivery of content entirely in French, which is essential at Secondary level. At the end of the school year, students can be fully integrated into their grade level, motivated to continue their learning and prepared for future challenges in French.

We are delighted to share the highlights of our Winter Holiday Club, which took place from 24 February to 28 February. This year, our theme was “The Season to Sparkle”, and it truly was a magical week, filled with exciting activities, creativity, and memorable experiences for our students.
Throughout the week, the children participated in a variety of engaging and enriching activities, including baking workshops, arts and crafts sessions, and nature forest walks. One of the standout moments was enjoying a delightful picnic lunch at Spielplatz Weid, where the children relished their time outdoors, playing and bonding with friends. Another cozy and fun-filled afternoon saw our young chefs creating their own personalized pizzas, adding a delicious twist to the week’s activities.

One of the most anticipated highlights of the Holiday Club was the Chocolate Workshop in Kaltbrunn, where the children had the unique opportunity to become chocolatiers for the day. Under expert guidance, they crafted their own chocolate figures, bringing their imaginative ideas to life.
In a warm and welcoming atmosphere, the children explored the secrets of chocolate-making, learning to distinguish between handmade and industrially produced chocolate. They were introduced to different techniques used in crafting chocolate bunnies, as well as the various shapes, styles, and finishing touches from different eras. With an extensive selection of molds available, the children let their creativity shine, casting and decorating their chocolate masterpieces.

Following the workshop, the children had the chance to package their creations in beautifully designed wrappings, adding a personal touch. The event concluded with a delightful salty aperitif, providing an excellent opportunity to admire their sweet works of art and celebrate their achievements.

Another unforgettable experience was the visit to the Pixel Zoo Jungle in Wollishofen. This interactive audiovisual journey transported the children to the heart of the jungle, taking them through the most remote corners of the Congo, Amazon, and Indonesia. They marveled at the beauty of the rainforest by night and learned fascinating facts about the wildlife that inhabits these lush environments.

This unique blend of entertainment and education offered an engaging way for children to understand the intricate connections within nature. After the show, the children expressed their creativity by coloring pictures of their favorite animals, further reinforcing their appreciation for the wonders of the natural world.

To wrap up the exciting week, we visited an indoor playground in Pfäffikon, where the children could unleash their energy in a fun and safe environment. From trampolines and slides to bouncy castles and climbing frames, there was no shortage of excitement. The playground provided the perfect setting for the children to play, explore, and engage in unstructured fun, an ideal way to end the Holiday Club on a high note.
