Growing beanstalks in Kindergarten 

Exploring fairytales in Kiga was a great way to spark the class' imagination and interest in storybooks. Students explored a variety of stories, from The Gingerbread Man to Jack and the Beanstalk. The children used the story of Jack and the Beanstalk to extend their learning by planting a bean to see if it would too reach the sky.   

Kiga 1 collected beans, soil, water and pots and began to plant. The class was intrigued to learn about the bean's life cycle and would monitor them daily, providing them with much-needed water and sunlight. Following this process, the children debated why their beans were less or even more magical than Jack's beans in the Beanstalk.  

It was great to see how discussing fairytales inspired the children's thinking and interest in learning about the world.

Music

To begin the new school year, the primary 3 Flamingo class begun exploring how music has changed over the past 50 years. We watched some music videos and listened to many songs to understand how the sounds, genres and outfits transformed the world of music during different decades. We discussed how music plays a very important role in the lives of people all around the world. We also reflected how songs make us feel different emotions and how we can express ourselves through singing and dance. 

We then begun our fun project. First, each child had to choose one famous singer or band from the last 50 years. Secondly. they began researching about their artist or band and created a beautiful poster which they needed to present to the class. Lastly, they were to make a creative dance and/or singing performance. They could either perform live or create a music video. Both primary 3 classes gathered to watch all premiere performances.  Some of our special performances included hits from Michael Jackson (Hussain), The Beatles (Wimberly), George Michael (Ilya), Spice Girls (Pippa), Taylor Swift (Agata) and The Rolling Stones (Nicolas). All teachers and students were amazed by the effort, creativity and talent of these performances. Great job Flamingos!

Was für ein Spass

Es war eine lustige Erfahrung, mit der 3. Klasse Schlittschuh zu laufen. Wir fuhren mittags nach Heurid, assen unsere Lunchpakete und kamen um 15:30 Uhr wieder in die Schule. Unsere Lehrer haben für uns alle Schlittschuhe gemietet, damit wir alle Schlittschuhlaufen konnten. Frau Kontny brachte einigen von uns Tricks bei und half allen, so gut sie konnte. Wir konnten in Gruppen skaten, Spass haben, und ich persönlich denke, es war eine tolle Erfahrung. Für die 5. Klassen war es eine grossartige Gelegenheit, Zeit mit ihren ehemaligen Lehrern zu verbringen und die 3. Klassen lernten ihre zukünftigen Lehrer besser kennen. Es war schönes Wetter, und dank unserer Lehrer war alles super geplant. Wir waren alle erschöpft nach dem Skaten, aber ich glaube, unsere Eltern waren glücklich. Niemand wurde verletzt und wir wurden alle sicher nach Hause gebracht. Ich würde das gerne wieder tun, und ein grosses Dankeschön an unsere Lehrer, die es für uns organisiert haben.

Shading and space

One of the artists introduced to primary 5 and 6 this first semester has been Georgia O’ Keeffe, an American artist best known for her paintings of flowers and desert landscapes who played an important part in the development of modern art in America.  O’ Keeffe had a unique way of painting nature, simplifying its shapes and forms; her paintings are beautifully shaded, ranging from light to dark tones. The art project involved the students to paint their own work inspired by her style. The focus was on shading, a crucial skill in art to create the illusion of form, space and light. The result was a variety of amazing landscapes and enlarged close ups of flowers. 

One other project we made with primary 4 and 5 has been to reproduce a painting of Keith Haring, an American artist whose pop art emerged from the New York City graffiti scene of the 1980s. Keith Haring’s work has a cartoon quality to it that makes it especially relatable to kids. He used bright, often primary colours, and subjects like crawling babies, dancing people, dogs, and spaceships. Keeping the proportions and the right distance between the two figures requires putting into practice one of the seven elements of art we have focused on this year: the element of space.

Sich kreativ austoben

Zwischen den Sport- und Frühlingsferien war das Thema «Le Parkour» im Sportunterricht in der 4.-6.Klasse aktuell. Es handelt sich dabei um keine klassische Sportart, sondern um eine neuere Trendsportart.

Parkour ist eine Fortbewegungsart oder auch die Kunst verschiedenste Hindernisse schnell, effizient und «stylisch» zu überwinden. Dabei ist viel Kreativität gefragt, denn es gibt kein richtig oder falsch, wie ein Hindernis überwunden werden soll. An oberster Priorität stehen natürlich die eigene Sicherheit und die Selbsteinschätzung. Danach folgt die kreative Lösungsfindung und das Ausprobieren der verschiedensten Möglichkeiten die Hindernisse zu meistern.

Die Schüler und Schülerinnen konnten mit viel Freude in dem aufgestellten Parcours nicht nur alle Hindernisse erfolgreich hinter sich lassen, sondern auch die vielleicht anfangs vorhandene Angst davor.

Entwicklung und Umsetzung von Nachhaltigkeit

Als Teil einer SIS-weiten Initiative haben wir ein Sustainability Team gebildet. Diese Gruppe von 9 Schüler und Schülerinnen hat sich zum Ziel gesetzt, langfristige Projekte zur Verbesserung der Nachhaltigkeit an unserer Schule zu entwickeln und umzusetzen. Nachhaltigkeit umfasst zahlreiche Bereiche wie den Schutz der natürlichen Umwelt, soziale und kulturelle Harmonie und die Aufklärung darüber, was Nachhaltigkeit bedeutet. 
Das Team begann mit einer gründlichen Bestandsaufnahme unserer Schule in zahlreichen Nachhaltigkeitsbereichen. Auf der Grundlage dieser Informationen erarbeiteten sie mögliche Projektideen. Anschliessend stellten sie Mr. Howard den von ihnen gewählten Projektplan vor. Derzeit passt das Team seinen Projektplan an und ergänzt ihn. 
Das Team freut sich darauf, seine Pläne mit der Schulgemeinschaft zu teilen und Schritt für Schritt die Nachhaltigkeit an unserer Schule zu verbessern.
