Never too young for Maths!

Our Kindergarten 1 and 2 students are ever curious and interested to learn more about themselves and their environment. Their awareness of early mathematical concepts help them to make sense of and appreciate their world better. In the past six weeks, we have been tackling the topic, math and number awareness/knowledge from 1-10/20. We made use of playful and differentiated strategies as well as manipulatives which made learning maths truly fun, interactive and appropriate to their age and interest. We started with rote counting by counting our body parts and playing with spindle sticks, cylinders and the like. We blew and popped bubbles to practice one to one correspondence. We also enjoyed singing counting songs such as «One elephant went out to play». We became familiar with number symbols by playing hop scotch and baking number cookies. We explored writing numbers by doing the numbers dance and using sand. More and more, we have noticed the children's ease and confidence in counting their snack or timing themselves while doing an activity. One is never too young indeed to learn Maths!
